About Toolio

Toolio exists because software directories stopped being useful. Most of them list everything, describe nothing, and rank by whoever paid. You can read forty listings and still not know which tool to open.

We do the opposite thing, badly scaled but honestly: a person opens each tool, uses it briefly, writes down what it is good at and what it is bad at, and signs the date. That limits us to roughly a thousand listings instead of fifty thousand. We think a thousand you can trust beats fifty thousand you cannot.

What we changed in 2026

The earlier version of this site carried 9,192 listings, most of them generated rather than written. In August we removed 5,192 of them and began rewriting the rest. Every description on the site now has a named author and a date, and every listing states a limitation. If a listing does not, it has not been done yet and it says so.

Who runs it

One reviewer: Alex. We are based in Riga, Latvia, and the company is registered there. Tool vendors pay us for listing speed and placement, which is how the site is funded and which is set out in full on the how we review page.

What we are not

We are not a marketplace, we do not resell software, and we take no commission on what you buy. Some outbound links are affiliate links and those are disclosed. We do not run display advertising.
