A chatbot is software you talk to in a chat window, which answers questions or completes simple tasks.

In practice: Older chatbots followed scripted decision trees; AI chatbots use a language model and can answer in free text. Businesses put them on websites and in apps to answer support questions, qualify leads or book appointments, often trained on their own help articles.

Why it matters when picking a tool

For customer support, check how the bot hands over to a human, whether it only answers from your content, and how it behaves when it does not know. A bot that confidently gives wrong answers costs more than no bot.
