Generative AI is AI that creates new content, such as text, images, audio, video or code, rather than only classifying or predicting.

In practice: It learns patterns from large amounts of existing content and produces new material that follows them. Chatbots, image generators, voice tools and video generators are all generative AI. Most tools in the directory fall into this group.

Why it matters when picking a tool

Generative tools are fast at first drafts and variations, and weak at accuracy and originality. Plan for a person to review and edit the output. For commercial use, check the tool's terms on ownership of outputs and whether it offers any protection if content turns out to copy existing work.
